RE: New to site

If you feel confident and comfortable with the 1200, go for it! Everybody has different likes and dislikes. Follow the crowed as far as asking questions, gathering information and experience, in the end you should make your own choice. I just happen to be lucky that I don't want a bigger or "better" bike. I'm happy with the 650 Classic. I also know one can spend a fortune on accessories for a bike. I don't do that. One time I dropped the 650, a real stupid move on my part. I was backing up, walking the bike slowly, wheels cut max to the right, my rear wheel hit the lip of an asphalt driveway, and down I came like a rock. The left handgrip weight was a little scratched up. I was more embarrassed and mad than hurt. I was too cheap to replace the scratched grip weight. I went to Home Depot and bought a pair of black rubber crutch tips for about $2.00. They fit perfectly. Later, some guy,a stranger, asked me where I got those grip ends. I told him I got them at the HD dealer, he asked how much they cost, I said $58 and change. He said, I want a pair! I had to level with him, I didn't think he would believe me. My point is you can "customize" a bike one of two ways, the expensive way or the cheap way. Ride Safely!

RE: Is Victory a silent American?

I believe advertising may contribute to the answer. It stands to reason, a large advertising account, the more exposure the company will get. I learned a long time ago, not to put too much faith in what a publication prints about a product. If the publication has advertisements it has to be somewhat "lenient" on their rating of the product. On the other hand publications like "Motorcycle Consumer", carries no advertisements and has to be beholden to no one but the publication purchaser. I subscribe to Rider and Cruiser to read the consumers opinions and to see what's new, but I take everything else with a grain of salt. Ride Safely

RE: New to site

One of the things I like about riding is, it forces me to clear my mind. The fact that riding is something very rewarding and dangerous is what forces you, well me anyway, to think about what you are doing every second of the ride. I enjoy listening to music, and I know the last thing I need on my bike, is a Stereo system, because I know it would affect my concentration. :) How did you like your 46' Indian? The 09's are coming out this fall and their prices are a bit steep for me. I always liked their looks though. Still have the Indian? Ride Safely

RE: New to site

It all depends what you are comfortable with. My first bike was a Virago 250cc. It was in top shape (only 92 miles) so there was no problem with it being safe. Initially the 250cc felt very big to me. After 3 months, as my riding confidence grew, the 250cc got smaller and smaller. It was time for me to upgrade, so I went to a V-Star Classic 650cc and sold the 250cc for what I paid for it. Thats what I ride today. I was thinking of moving up to an 800cc or even a 1200cc, but after some serious thinking and soul searching, I decided against it because I was happy with the 650cc, so why change! What ever you do, I suggest you get something safe and in decent shape. It doesn't have to be pristine, as long as it's in good mechanical condition. Let us know what you decided to do and good luck! Ride Safely!

RE: Since I don't have an American V-Twin

Gotcha! I see too many people at summer bike gatherings, drinking beer in the hot sun, then getting on their rides and hitting the road. I don't know what they are thinking. These are not all young people. They are a mixed bunch. Ride Safely

RE: 1994 Honda Magna starting problem - please help.

You say it's a 94'. Is the battery original? Sounds to me like the battery isn't putting out enough juice to turn the starter enough to start the engine. Try charging the battery or remove the battery and check to see what it's putting out. Could be you need a new battery! Ride Safely

RE: Brand New Bike On Road Trip To Break In? Yes or No

I guess you can assume MPG will be btwn 70 and 80 MPG! Can't say that I blame you. A 250 cc will give you excellent milage. Be very careful of the wind and whizzing traffic. Ride Safely!

RE: Brand New Bike On Road Trip To Break In? Yes or No

I would follow the instructions in the owner's manual. Unless it states that no breakin is necessary, I wouldn't. IMO a new engine should be pampered for the first 1K miles. A constant speed of any kind could be the worst thing to do to the engine. What bike did you get? Good Luck with it! & Ride Safely!

RE: Dumb and Dumber

Several questions come to mind: 1.How long have you been riding this particular bike? In other words, in this bike new and you are just getting use to it or have you been on this bike for a while. 2. Was your leg numb when this happened? Were you able to stand right up when this happened? 3. What was new, were the boots new, were the pants new? 4. Were you concentrating on why the car in front of you stopped? Did you have to lock up the brakes, or were you leaning slightly when you stopped? Any additional info would help. I have been riding this bike since 2002. I began riding motorcycles in 2001. This is my second bike, my first bike was a 250cc Virago. I rode the Virago about 4 months, bought the Vstar and sole the Virago. I have been on this bike for a while. My leg wasn't numb but due to type II Diabetes both feet are a little numb. I was able to stand up immediately when the bike went down. the bike landed on the left grip and there was virtually no damage at all. The boots were not new, nor the pants new. I did lock up the brakes and I was leaning to the left anticipating to support the bike when I stopped. I don't believe I stopped in haste. I had plenty of room behind the car, about 15 feet. The only thing I can really recall was that I had trouble getting my left foot off the peg. Thanks for the interest. Ride Safely!
